Safer Internet Day – 9th February 2021

Coordinated by UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day offers a great opportunity to come together to empower young people to create #AnInternetWeTrust.

You’ll find advice and resources below to help young people explore the reliability of their online world and the best ways to spot and speak out against harmful and misleading content online.

Helping young people develop online critical thinking

This Safer Internet Day we’d like to encourage all parents, carers and educational professionals to get involved in the day to give children and young people the support they need to build their critical thinking online.

While the digital world offers a range of information and opportunities for young people, it’s also become harder to separate fact from fiction. As children are spending more time online constantly making decisions of what to trust, it’s now more important than ever for them know how influence, persuasion and manipulation can impact their decisions, opinions and what they share online.

how do you know what to trust online
00:11
well I would always check where it came
00:14
from and
00:15
who made it if something seems too good
00:17
to be true
00:18
then normally it is hands up then tell
00:21
me something you have to think about or
00:23
you can't always trust
00:24
what do you think fake news false
00:27
information spread on purpose as
00:29
news and shared by traditional news
00:31
media or online social media
00:37
what can parents and carers do to help
00:40
with trust online
00:41
I think parents could make sure all of
00:44
the apps are safe for you to go on
00:46
and there's no harmful behaviour and
00:49
research
00:50
and find out about the app
00:53
how does it make you feel when you see
00:56
false information it makes me feel a
00:59
little bit stupid
01:01
and sad and a bit angry as well
01:04
annoyed well it makes me feel kind of
01:08
kind of confused how can what you
01:10
experience
01:11
online affect you and others well first
01:14
it's the proof um if you
01:17
don't know what's true and what's fake
01:21
then it can affect your mental life or
01:24
your physical life
