What is Lingokids?

Lingokids is an interactive educational platform designed to help young children learn about different topics, such as English, Math, Music, Art and Life Skills. It is one of the most popular child-friendly apps in the world, with over 100 million downloads.

The app is available to download on iOS and Android devices. It is free to use, although a subscription is available for £82.99/year. This subscription gives users access to additional content, progress reports and the ability to make multiple profiles. However, this subscription is not necessary to use the app.

Lingokids is intended for children aged 2-8 years old.

How it works

The platform is built around a system called Playlearning, which is based on Lingokids’ belief that children learn best when they are having fun and their curiosity is piqued. Because of this, children learn through games, songs and videos rather than traditional lesson formats. For example, one game intended to teach children hygiene involves the child having to give a panda a bath, interacting with the app to brush the panda’s teeth and dry their hair.

Upon setting up the app, parents will be asked to input their child’s age and select the subjects they will be focusing upon. Despite the app being intended for children aged 2-8, there is still the option to select 1 or 9 as your child’s age. The topics available on the app include:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Life Skills
  • Technology
  • Art
  • Science

The app will automatically adapt to your child’s performance, giving them more challenging lessons as they progress in their learning. With the premium subscription, parents can view this progress in the ‘Progress tracking’ area.

Lingokids parental controls

Lingokids offers screen time controls, but these are only available with a premium subscription. With a subscription, parents can set time limits on their child’s use of Lingokids from within the app. Similar limits can be set without premium through the device settings.

There are no other controls available on Lingokids, but as all content on the app is already appropriate for children, this is not an issue.

Benefits of Lingokids

  • Educational, can help children learn a range of topics
  • Fun and engaging lesson design
  • Safe, all content appropriate for young children
  • Free version offers enough content to benefit kids

What to watch out for

Overall, Lingokids is a very safe app, and suitable for young children to use. However, there are still a couple of things that parents should consider if they want to download the app for their kids.

While Lingokids is an educational app that can benefit children, it’s still screen time. Parents should ensure that their child is not spending too much time on the app. The gamified nature of the lessons makes them more engaging for children. However, this could result in children wanting to use the app for longer than they should. You can use the device’s in-built settings to set time limits on the app, preventing excessive screentime.

Children also might feel limited by the basic version of the app and want the premium subscription instead. The subscription is not overly expensive, but if your child wants it, you could try using the free version alongside them to help them use it to its full capacity.

Despite these concerns, Lingokids is a great app for educating younger children in a fun and engaging way.
