What is Netflix Playground?
Netflix Playground is an app available to all Netflix streaming subscribers for no additional cost. It includes a range of games for children aged 8 and under. The games feature a range of children’s favourite characters from shows like Peppa Pig, Sesame Street and multiple Dr. Seuss titles.
The app is ad-free and does not include any in-app purchases. It is also playable offline so can be used during car trips or plane rides.
How it works
You can download Netflix Playground via the Google Play Store or Apple App Store for free. However, you must be subscribed to one of Netflix’s membership tiers to use the app. If you are a member, simply login with your Netflix account to give your child access to the games.
Types of games
Netflix Playground has a select number of games available with more to be added as it grows. The available games vary between adventure, puzzle and skill-based games. Some of these games can support the development of skills in young children such as pattern recognition, coordination and counting. Games can be installed individually to the device.
Netflix Playground parental controls
Unlike Netflix streaming, which lets you set parental controls, Netflix Playground does not have specific settings for parents. However, the app is intentionally designed for children aged 8 and under. All of the available games should therefore be appropriate for children within this age group.
Additionally, Netflix Playground does not contain ads or in-app purchases, meaning it is relatively safe for children to use independently.
Still, we recommend using the app with your child at first and then under supervision to ensure each game they play is suitable for their age.
Also, be sure to set screen time limits using device settings or external timers. The UK Government advises that children under 5 get an hour or less of screen time per day. If you use Netflix Playground, it should only make up a small part of their daily allowance.
Benefits of Netflix Playground
- Child-friendly space featuring characters kids recognise.
- No ads or in-app purchases.
- Included in Netflix streaming subscriptions at no additional cost.
- A range of games for both entertainment and skill-building.
- Appropriate for young children up to 8 years old.
What to watch out for
Because Netflix Playground is generally considered safe for under-8s, it’s easy to let children play without parent involvement. However, it’s still important to remain actively involved — even if it’s just staying in the same room as them while they play.
Without supervision, children might access games they find difficult, which could lead to frustration. Additionally, they cannot track their own screen time so will need help using the app in short bursts rather than hours at a time.
As Netflix Playground continues to grow, new games will be added. So, make sure to regularly review the games your child has access to. This will help ensure they are only playing games appropriate to their age and development.
