How to access Moderation settings

To manage what content you will see and who can interact with you while using Bluesky, you must access the Moderation settings.

To access Moderation settings:

Step 1 – Open the Bluesky app and click the 3 horizontal lines in the top left of the screen.

Step 2 – From the side menu select Settings.

Step 3 – In the settings, click Moderation.

Step 4 – You are now inside the Moderation settings and can begin making changes to Interaction settings, Blocked Accounts, Content filters and more.

Managing Interaction settings

In the Interaction settings you can change who can interact with your posts on Bluesky.

To manage Interaction settings:

Step 1 – From the Moderation menu, click Interaction settings.

Step 2 – In the Post Interaction Settings you can enable or disable quote posts and decide to allow replies from Everybody, Nobody, Mentioned users, Users you follow or Your followers.

Muting words and tags

Posts can be muted based off the words and tags they include. Bluesky users can choose the specific words and tags to mute within the Moderation settings.

To mute words and tags:

Step 1 – In the Moderation settings, click Muted words & tags.

Step 2 – Inside the Muted words & tags page, you can choose how long you would like to mute a word or tag for, and then type the word or tag in the textbox to begin muting it.

Step 3 – When you’ve typed in the word or tag you wish to mute and decided how long you’d like to block it for, click Add +.

Step 4 – Once blocked, you will be able to see the muted word on the page. To unmute the word, simply click the X icon next to it.

Creating moderation lists

Moderation lists are public lists of users you have muted or blocked in bulk. These lists can be viewed by other users.

To create a Moderation list:

Step 1 – From the Moderation menu, click Moderation lists.

Step 2 – Inside Moderation Lists, click + New.

Step 3 – Create a list by choosing an avatar, list name and description, then click Save.

Step 4 – To begin adding users to the list, click Start adding people!

Step 5 – When the Add people to list menu pops up, it will show a list of users you follow. Click Add to add them to your moderation list, or search for another user in the search bar.

Step 6 – You will now see the users you have added in the moderation list. These users will now be muted.

Setting Content filters

Setting Content filters

By default adult content will be disabled on Bluesky. However, non-sexual nudity, such as artistic nudes, will still be shown. You can filter this content in the Moderation settings.

To set Content filters:

Step 1 – In the Moderation settings, navigate down to Content filters.

Step 2 – To hide non-sexual nudity, click Hide.

Nudity will no longer appear on your feed. The adult filter toggle should also be disabled, so check that it is.

Using Advanced moderation

Advanced moderation allows users to hide or be warned before they see certain content on their feed.

To access Advanced moderation:

Step 1 – On the Moderation settings, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Bluesky Moderation Service.

Step 2 – Scroll down the page and click hide on any content types that you do not want your child seeing.

This content will now be hidden from Bluesky.

If other users are posting content that you deem inappropriate or abusive, you can block and report them.

To block on Bluesky:

Step 1 – On the profile of the user you would like to block, click the 3 dots in the top right of the screen.

Step 2 – On the pop-up menu, select Block account.

Step 3 – When the Block Account? pop-up appears, click Block.

Step 4 – A notification will appear at the top of the screen informing you the account has been blocked. You will no longer see content or be contacted from this user.

To report on Bluesky:

Step 1 – On the profile of the user you would like to block, click the 3 dots in the top right of the screen.

Step 2 – On the pop-up menu, select Report account.

Step 3 – Select the reason that best matches your issue with the user.

Step 4 – Select the moderation service you want to review your report, then click Submit report.

The user is now reported.
