Online Safety Champion Competition – Terms & Conditions

Introduction

By participating in the competition, you are agreeing to these terms and conditions. The competition is being run by Internet Matters Limited.

Eligibility to enter

The competition is open to entrants who are both UK residents and over 18 years of age. Entry is limited to upper primary classes at primary schools in the UK (in England, this means Year 5 and 6, in other UK countries, this means the last 2 years of primary school). Internet Matters Limited employees and associates are excluded from the competition.

The competition is free to enter.

By entering the competition, you confirm that your class and school are eligible to do so and that you are eligible to receive any prizes that may be awarded to you.

The competition will start on 24th April 2025 and end on 13th June 2025. A school may make separate batches of entries for different classes, however, an individual pupil may only enter once. Entrants should only enter by post or online; entries using both methods will not be considered.

Entering the competition by post

Those entering via post must send their entries to Internet Matters Ltd, Faraday Building, 1 Knightrider St, London EC4V 5AF. Entries must be received by 13th June 2025.

Entries should include the questionnaire and character template for each pupil, as well as a covering form for each batch of entries, which contains the full name of the teacher entering on behalf of the class, the school’s name, their school email address and contact number.

Pupils should include their own name, with every question of the questionnaire completed.

Entering the competition online

Teachers entering on behalf of pupils must provide their full name and email address via the competition entry form hosted at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Kd-omb115BR5TI8mUPl0Cw2QtN5lDSdsro5uQVYmMDY/viewform?edit_requested=true.

Entrants must use a school email address to enter the competition.

Individual pupil’s entries should include a completed questionnaire and character template.

The Prize

The prizes are being donated by Tesco Mobile, sponsors of Digital Matters.

The winning pupil’s school will be awarded a £7,000 donation and a £500 Tesco Gift Card

The entry awarded second place will be awarded a £4,500 donation and a £500 Tesco Gift Card for their school.

The awarded third place will be awarded a £1,500 donation and a £500 Tesco Gift Card for their school.

The prizes ae non-transferable and non-exchangeable, and no cash alternatives for the gift cards will be provided.

We reserve the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value if circumstances beyond our control require doing so.

Internet Matters Limited’s decision on any aspect of the competitions is final and binding, and no correspondence will be entered into about it.

Winner Selection and Communication

The winning entry will be chosen by our judging panel, and the 3 winners (first, second and third place) will be notified via their teacher’s email address that has been provided on the submission form by 1st July 2025.

Pupils’ entries will be judged by a panel from Internet Matters and Tesco Mobile. The winner will be chosen based on:

  • How unique the character is compared to other online safety champions (main characters) on Digital Matters
  • How realistic the character is. Characters should look like children as opposed to superheroes or non-human figures
  • Whether they have good online safety habits in their answers. Pupils should demonstrate knowledge about positive ways to stay safe online
  • How descriptive and detailed the pupil’s entry is.

Written parts of the entry will not be judged for grammar or spelling, but will look at the creativity of the answers.

Internet Matters will contact the relevant primary schools by telephone to validate that the winning entries have been submitted by teachers of upper primary classes at the schools. If this is not the case, then an alternative winner will be selected.

Internet Matters Limited will then make two attempts to contact the winners via email to the relevant teachers. The first attempt will be by 1st July 2025, and the second will be 3 working days later.

If the teacher does not respond to the emails informing them of the winning entry from their pupil within 7 days of the second email, and does not provide the information requested, they forfeit their right to the prize, and Internet Matters Limited reserves the right to select and notify a new winner.

Delivery of the Prize

The primary schools who are awarded the first, second and third prizes will need to invoice Internet Matters Limited for the relevant donation amount on or before 18th July 2025. Payment will be made via BACS. Gift cards will be sent separately by Royal Mail recorded delivery, within 3 working days of confirmation of delivery address.

Data Protection and Publicity

Teachers agree that any personal information provided when entering the competition will be used by Internet Matters Limited for the purposes of administering the competition and for the other purposes as specified in our Privacy Policy.

All entrants may request information on the winning participants by emailing info@internetmatters.org.

If requested by Internet Matters Limited, the winners agree to release their first name to any other competition participants.

The names of the winning schools and the location (region) of the winner’s school may be announced on Internet Matters Limited’s website and social media channels.

The winner will be required to participate in follow-up communications, including but not limited to written quotes for Internet Matters’ social channels, press releases and photo/video content.

Limitation of Liability

Internet Matters Limited accepts no liability for any damage, loss, injury, or disappointment suffered by any entrants as a result of participating in the competition.
