Parent tips

  • Think: Talk about what personal information means online

Help children understand that personal information includes things like their name, address, passwords and photos that reveal details about their life.

Explain why this information should not be shared publicly or with people they don’t know.
  • Check: Help children recognise when information is being requested

Show children examples of when apps, games or websites might ask for personal information when creating an account.

Encourage them to check with you before entering details online.
  • Choose: Support children in creating safe online habits

    - Help children create strong passwords that are difficult for others to guess.
    - Talk about why passwords should never be shared with friends or posted online.

Explore privacy settings together so children understand how to control who can see their information.
  • Act: Support children if their information is shared or compromised

    - Let children know they should tell you or another trusted adult straight away if they think someone has accessed their account or personal information.

    - Help them change passwords, review privacy settings and report the issue on the platform if needed.

As children begin using more online services independently, learning how to protect their personal information helps them stay safe and confident online.
