Snapchat just announced the launch of Spotlight, a Snapchat feature that functions like TikTok and Instagram Reels.
Rolling out in 11 countries including the US and UK, Snapchat is offering a share of $1m (£750,000) to its users every day as it tries to compete with TikTok on viral videos. Quite simply, the new Spotlight feature will use an algorithm to recommend the ‘most engaging’ posts to watch based on what a user is interested in.
The $1m payouts will run until the end of the year – and it may extend subject to its success.
You can either submit a video or watch a video in the Spotlight feature.
To view a Spotlight video: Spotlight has its own dedicated tab in the app, the videos you see in this section can be up to 1 min log. Once you tap into Spotlight, you’ll see snaps according to Snapchat’s algorithm – so based on what you’ve viewed in the past and how long you’ve watched it.
To submit a Spotlight video: Anyone can submit one, just tap the ‘Spotlight’ tab when posting to ensure it populates the section and is signed up to the scheme eligible for the earnings.
How much a video makes for its owner is based on a complex formula – but includes how many views the video has.
Snapchat has said: ‘they actively monitor for fraud to ensure that we only account for authentic engagement with Snaps’ and ‘will moderate the feed for violations – and for anyone attempting to game the algorithm.’
